Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1
Dvořák Noon Witch
Janáček Taras Bulba
New Zealand pianist Sylvia Jiang makes a bravura return to her hometown orchestra with Tchaikovsky’s monumental Piano Concerto No.1. Another young Kiwi opens the concert, in Douglas Lilburn’s hymn to autumn in Canterbury, written when he was only 21.
The second half of the performance features two musical stories. Dvořák’s terrifying depiction of the child-stealing witch who appears on the stroke of midday is followed by Janáček’s terrifically exciting, startlingly bloodthirsty tale of the Cossack warrior Taras Bulba.
