Auckland Philharmonia's Community Bash brings together instrumentalists and singers of all ages and all abilities for an afternoon of spectacular music-making in the Auckland Town Hall. With special arrangements provided for beginner, intermediate and advanced players, enabling everyone to join in to play or sing in this huge orchestra of over 400 Aucklanders!

Come along and see the instruments of the orchestra come alive in this narrated and interactive concert for under-sixes. With concerts in various venues around Auckland, this is a great way to sing-along, dance-along and conduct-along to some popular orchestral works.

Using resources provided by Carnegie Hall (New York), Auckland Philharmonia's Learn & Participate programme gives teachers the tools to teach music! Participating classes learn a set of songs on recorder, violin, voice or another instrument. The “glowing centrepiece of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's In the Elements concert”*, Salina Fisher and Jerome Kavanagh Poutama’s ‘Papatūānuku’ is today’s SOUNZ Film release, part of our comprehensive coverage of Aotearoa-New Zealand works performed by the APO in 2023.
The work, in Salina’s words, “honours Papatūānuku (earth mother) as the bearer of all life, and centres instruments/voices that are closely connected to the natural world. Meet Begonia Chan (cello) and Jonathan Cohen (Principal Clarinet) from the Auckland Philharmonia. The Auckland Philharmonia is a leading performing arts organisation in Aotearoa New Zealand, serving Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the country’s largest and most vibrant city, with concerts, events and activities throughout the year. The orchestra presents more than 60 performances annually, showcasing many of the world’s finest classical musicians as well as exciting collaborations with New Zealand’s most inventive contemporary artists.

We begin our comprehensive SOUNZ Films coverage of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s performances of works by the composers of Aotearoa New Zealand with a world premiere. Symphony No.7 was the latest in the celebrated partnership between composer Ross Harris and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. In the New Zealand Herald William Dart wrote,
“This is a restless, unpredictable score. The pastoral mood of its opening bars is soon subverted by intriguing smudges of dissonance and teasing whiplashes of percussion. Striking contrasts come in spikey dances and jaunty, sometimes sinister marches; after an uproarious climactic tutti, the symphony’s 24-minute life fades into wisps of solo strings.”

We conclude our wrap-up of recent orchestral performances with Gillian Whitehead’s violin concerto ‘Tai timu, tai pari’. Gillian writes, “From my studio on the Otago peninsula I can look across the harbour towards the hills opposite, and what I see constantly changes. The tide ebbs and flows — tai timu, tai pari translates from te reo Māori as ‘low tide, high tide’ — light plays on the water, birds forage for food, rest on the water, whirl in flocks.
When I was writing, images of the variation in waves lapping on the shore, of distant disputes between birds or sea-creatures and birds in flight, of footprints on the beach came to mind. Not that the piece is primarily a soundscape — more than most of my pieces it harks back to the balance and proportions of the classical era.”

Get ready for a musical adventure with Toi Time! Live with Auckland Philharmonia! Join the enthusiastic audience as Buzz, Māia, and Jojo embark on a musical quest through the different sections of the Auckland Philharmonia. There's a mystery afoot for our favourite Toi Time friends – Buzz, Māia, and Jojo. They adore the thrilling blasts of the trumpets in their songs, but where in the grand orchestra do these shiny instruments belong? From the violins singing high and clear to the mighty drums making your heart thump, they'll meet a symphony of amazing instruments and talented musicians. Each section plays a vital role, creating a beautiful tapestry of sound.
Originally titled ‘Song of the Antipodes’, Douglas Lilburn’s ‘A Song of Islands’ was premiered by the National Orchestra in Wellington in August 1947. Lilburn considered the work the third in a three-fold statement, preceded by ‘Overture: Aotearoa’ and ‘Landfall in Unknown Seas’. Biographer Philip Norman argues that, along with ‘Prodigal Country’, these works, “have to be considered prime examples of the composer’s quest for a New Zealand musical identity.”

David Hamilton’s ‘The Ripe Breath of Autumn’ for solo horn and chamber orchestra was sketched in 1982 and completed in 1985. David writes, “The title, which has no programmatic significance, comes from a line in a poem by American Walt Whitman. The Ripe Breath of Autumn sits rather uneasily in my total output having few stylistic similarities to other works I have written. It is a dark brooding work, and might best be described as a rhapsody.”
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Vincent Hardaker with solo horn player Norberto López García in this Resound recording captured not long after the end of New Zealand’s first pandemic lockdown.

Douglas Lilburn’s ‘Allegro for Strings’ was completed in 1942 and premiered by the Auckland 1YA Studio Orchestra. Lilburn’s biographer Philip Norman says the work is one of the composer’s most powerful earlier pieces and reveals that, privately, Lilburn suggested to his lover Rita Angus that the soul of their miscarried child lived in the work. Publicly, Lilburn attributed the work’s inspiration to both paintings of Angus and Denis Glover’s poem ‘Holiday Piece’.

‘Murmuring Light’ by Salina Fisher was premiered by the Manhattan School of Music Composers Orchestra, conductor George Manahan, in March of 2019. Its New Zealand premiere is seen in this Resound film from the Auckland Town Hall, where Giordano Bellincampi conducts the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Salina writes, “In Studio Drift’s interactive light installation Flylight, many delicate glass tubes light up in unpredictable swarm-like patterns. These patterns are based on the flock behavior of birds, and are responsive to the viewer’s movement. While birds can symbolize individual freedom, in a murmuration they find safety in numbers, sensing each other’s direction and moving collectively. In Murmuring Light, I explore this delicate balance between the individual and the group. Through various musical parameters, the distinction between ‘individual’ and ‘group' is heightened and blurred, in a continuous shift of light.”

John Ritchie’s ‘Suite No.1 for Strings’ (1956) was dedicated to Alex Lindsay, founder and conductor of the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra. The movements are titled Allegro, Air, Intrada and Fugue.
The suite is heard in this performance by the strings of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Blendulf back in April at the Auckland Town Hall.
