Double bassist Nicholas Arredondo is the acting Sub Principal Bass of the Auckland Philharmonia and bassist for the Southern California based chamber ensemble, Kontrapunktus. Recently, Mr. Arredondo performed under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel for three years as Resident Bass Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Born in Los Angeles, Mr. Arredondo grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he began studying bass with Don Hermanns and Ted Botsford. Under the tutelage of Peter Lloyd, Mr. Arredondo earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in Double Bass Performance from the Colburn Conservatory of Music. In addition to being a finalist and winning top prizes in major competitions such as YoungArts and the Vancouver Symphony Concerto Competition, Mr. Arredondo is a Sphinx Competition Laureate.
Mr. Arredondo has toured around the world under the batons of conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, John Williams, Stephane Deneve, and Esa-Pekka Salonen and performing in major venues such as Suntory Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Usher Hall, Symphony Hall - Boston, National Concert Hall - Taiwan, Philharmonie de Paris, Weiwuying Concert Hall, Barbican Center, Kitara Hall, Ozawa Hall, and Carnegie Hall.
Mr. Arredondo has performed as orchestral, chamber, and solo musician in the Pacific Music Festival, Taipei Music Academy and Festival, Edinburgh Music Festival, Perlman Music Program, and the National Arts Centre Young Artists Program, performing with renowned artists such as Noah Bendix-Balgley, Martin Chalifour, Itzhak Perlman, Scott St. John, the Miró Quartet, and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s chamber music series. Mr. Arredondo performs on multiple Grammy winning recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
