Winter Dreams

Prokofiev’s multifaceted concerto switches in an instant from heartfelt lyricism to bombastic savagery. Beatrice Colombis, the winner of the 2026 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, brings her agility and flair to the piece.

Surrounding it, music of cooler climes. In Tchaikovsky’s utterly charming First Symphony, we can feel the ice on the troika and see the warmly wrapped peasants from the very beginning. And late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s Ciel d’hiver features a glistening winter sky, with mystical echoes of vast space.
