Schubert’s Great Symphony

Nielsen really understood the soul of the flute, and two musicians who really understand Nielsen are the Auckland Philharmonia’s own Melanie Lançon and Giordano Bellincampi. They’re the ideal performers for this warm, open-hearted concerto.

It is framed by two quite different symphonies. Mozart’s is a bubbly ten-minute aperitif, whereas Schubert’s is nicknamed ‘The Great’ because it was his last and grandest symphony. Schubert needed these expansive dimensions to fully explore some of his noblest, most generous ideas.
