Conductor Giordano Bellincampi
Piano Paul Lewis
Rossini The Thieving Magpie: Overture
Mozart Piano Concerto No.23
Nielsen Symphony No.4, ‘The Inextinguishable’
The remarkable British pianist Paul Lewis makes his Auckland Philharmonia debut in Mozart’s summery Piano Concerto No.23.
The concert opens with Rossini at his most sparkling. Then, Giordano Bellincampi’s deep affinity with Nielsen’s music will be on full display with the ‘Inextinguishable’ Symphony — this life-affirming piece promises to be a highlight of the season. Written at the height of the First World War, the symphony is famous for its savage timpani duel, and its exultant triumph over darkness.
