Conductor Gábor Káli
Violin Simone Lamsma
Enescu Romanian Rhapsody No.1
Glazunov Violin Concerto
Beethoven Leonore Overture No.2
Kodály Peacock Variations
A trip to Central Europe frames this concert. Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No.1 is a fond tribute to the folk music of his homeland, and Kodály’s colourful variations are based on an ancient Hungarian song.
The tremendous Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma makes her Auckland Philharmonia debut with a tour de force for her instrument, Glazunov’s glittering Violin Concerto.
Beethoven was never quite satisfied with his only opera Leonore (later known as Fidelio), for which he wrote no less than four equally inspired overtures.
