Brahms 4

Brahms was never so unbuttoned as in this exuberant overture, remembering time in his youth spent in student societies with his great friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim.

One of the Auckland Philharmonia’s great friends and long-time collaborators, the matchless violinist James Ehnes returns to perform Brahms’ towering Violin Concerto that was composed and dedicated to Joachim in 1878.

Then, arguably the summation of Brahms’ life’s work: his Fourth Symphony, at once autumnal, dynamic, joyful, looking to the past and reaching for eternity.
