Michael Steer started playing Double Bass with Auckland Philharmonia in 1983. He went on to study with Roger Scott at Curtis Institue of Music, Philadelphia, after which he joined the NZSO bass section for 10 years.

Following a long break from playing he returned to the instrument and resumed a connection with Auckland Philharmonia, starting in 2010.

As well as his participation in music-making throughout NZ he has pursued study, gaining a degree in Art History as well as advanced study in Performance Psychology at Otago University. In his spare time he learned to fly (PPL) and has operated several small businesses.
