Conductor Antony Hermus
Violin Gil Shaham
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Prokofiev Cinderella (selections)
Beethoven’s towering concerto stands in Olympian solitude. Its technical challenges test the strongest violinists; its artistic ones expose the soul of the supreme musicians. Gil Shaham, appearing for the first time in New Zealand, is unquestionably such an artist.
Prokofiev saw the heroine of his ballet as more than a fairytale character, calling her ‘a real person, feeling, experiencing, and moving among us’. He clothes her in music which, by turns, is sprightly, ebullient, and sweetly full of heartfelt longing.
Gil Shaham's performance is supported by the Auckland Philharmonia Friends and a consortium of dedicated donors.
