Sir Andrew Davis
Conductor
We were sad to hear that Sir Andrew Davis, the conductor for this concert, passed away on 20 April at the age of 80. The musicians and staff of Auckland Philharmonia are very disappointed that we will not have the opportunity to make music with this titan of the classical music world.
There will obviously be changes to this concert, so please bear with us while we work through this. We will communicate directly with ticket-holders once we have updated information.
One of the most recognized and acclaimed conductors, Sir Andrew Davis’s career spanned more than 50 years during which he was the musical and artistic leader at several of the world’s most distinguished institutions including Lyric Opera of Chicago, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Sir Andrew conducted virtually all of the world’s major orchestras, opera companies, and festivals.
Sir Andrew’s wide-ranging repertoire encompassed the Baroque to contemporary and spans the symphonic, operatic, and choral worlds, and his artistry was documented in a vast and award-winning discography.
Sir Andrew was awarded Commander of the British Empire and a Knight Bachelor in the 1999 New Year Honours List.
