James Ioelu
Bass-baritone

James Ioelu is a New Zealand born Bass-Baritone whose voice has been described as a “commanding bass-baritone” that is “deeply resonant” with “woody tones across the range”. James received his Masters from the Manhattan School of Music and then went on to be a Young Artist at the Merola Opera Programme at San Francisco Opera, followed by a traineeship with the National Opera Studio in London. Recent engagements include Bass Soloist in Hayden’s Creation with the Australian Haydn Ensemble at the Canberra International Music Festival, Bass Soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Brahms Requiem with Christchurch City Choir, Bass Soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion with Auckland Choral, Bass Soloist in Bach’s St John’s Passion with Bach Musica, Leporello Don Giovanni (Wellington Opera), Fernando Fidelio (APO), Zuniga (c) Carmen (English National Opera), Monterone (c) Rigoletto (Glyndebourne Opera Tour), and Leporello (c) Don Giovanni and Pistola Falstaff (Garsington Opera).
