Corelli wrote his Sinfonia for an oratorio by another composer, and later recycled it into one of his rather more famous concerti grossi. These works for orchestra and a group of soloists inspired generations of composers, not least this beautiful piece by Bloch.

Respighi liked hunting through libraries for forgotten old music, which he transcribed in vivacious Technicolor. Nothing needs to be added, however, to Biber’s musical picture of a battle – Baroque music at its most fabulous!
