Staff and Musician 2025 Season Picks

We asked Auckland Philharmonia musicians and staff to pick which pieces they are looking forward to hearing in our 2025 Season.

Sir Andrew Davis 2000x1300

Jennifer Raven, Sub Principal Percussion

I am really looking forward to Mahler's Symphony No.3 next year because I love the way he uses all the different sonorities of the orchestra, from subtle percussion to the brilliant brass and woodwind sounds that make his music sparkle.

Robert Johnson, Librarian

I am looking forward to hearing Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé in 2025. Daphnis et Chloé is one of the most scintillating and sensual orchestral scores of the early twentieth century. It shows off every section of the orchestra and leaves the audience feeling exhilarated.

Beethoven 5 is probably the most recognisable symphony in the repertoire, but I still love performing it. I always hear and feel something new when we play it, it has a fantastic emotional arc.

I am looking forward to hearing 'Curious Creature' in 2025. We’ve spent the last three years working with award-winning children’s songwriter Chris Sanders to create the musical world of Hana The Glowworm. Schools across Aotearoa have been learning to sing and play the songs alongside other creative activities, and now we’ll be celebrating this project with a full stage production of Hana’s story! This orchestral show for young tamariki will feature an amazing cast of child actors and screened illustrations to immerse us in Hana’s adventure to discover the orchestra!

Jonathan Cohen, Section Principal Clarinet

I can’t wait to perform the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante next season with my wonderful colleagues here at the Auckland Phil! It’s not something I’ve ever worked on before, so I’m really excited to look at it with fresh eyes. The other solo piece for clarinet by Mozart is his Concerto, which I’ve basically been studying and performing for the past 20 years! Even if it’s still over 200 years old, this Sinfonia Concertante will be a new experience for me, and I hope I’ll be able to bring some of that freshness to this performance. I hope to see you there!

I am particularly looking forward to hearing Ria's performance of 'Te Ahi Kai Pō' - which translates to 'the fire burning away the darkness', and reflects on finding peace in the aftermath of war. In 2019 Teeks presented a powerful interpretation of this moving waiata with the Auckland Phil and kapa haka group Ngā Tūmanako, it will be a very special experience to hear Ria perform her own original version, once again backed by the full orchestra.

Baroque & Beyond is one of the concerts that I am truly looking forward to performing in the 2025 Season. Here, we will be playing one of the most celebrated works of all time - Handel's Water Music. I can't wait to share it with our Auckland audience, as this music will take them on a journey through regal grandeur, pastoral beauty, and festive cheer!
