Gather your mini music-lovers and preschool palaeontologists and head to Auckland Phil’s Kiri and Lou in Concert, a fun-filled interactive show that brings children's TV series Kiri and Lou to the big screen with a live orchestra. With two performances in Takapuna’s Bruce Mason Theatre on 22 August, don’t miss this dino-tastic gig the whole whānau will dig!
Beloved by tamariki across the motu, Kiri and Lou is an award-winning New Zealand-made animated series that follows the adventures of two prehistoric creatures, Kiri (voiced by Liv Tennet) and her friend Lou (voiced by Jemaine Clement), in an Aotearoa forest as they explore the world of feelings through laughter, song and play. Through a combination of quirky humour, original songs and emotional intelligence, the series explores friendship, empathy, self-expression and childhood emotions.
Auckland Philharmonia’s production of Kiri and Lou in Concert features the orchestra performing a selection of delightful songs written by Don McGlashan and Harry Sinclair, reimagined for orchestra, alongside stunning stop-motion visuals from the Kiri and Lou episodes. Presented by Liv Tennet, tamariki will love this uplifting concert that’s packed full of seriously singalong tunes, such as ‘Yum Yum Baronies’ and ‘Kiri and Lou’ish’, plus magical track ‘Shine Your Light’ and dance-along fun ‘Hoobie Hoobie’.
Kiri and Lou in Concert is a collaborative endeavour between Auckland Philharmonia, Orchestra Wellington, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra that’s delivered in partnership with Stretchy. Auckland Philharmonia’s performances of this concert are delivered thanks to orchestra’s core funders Creative NZ, Auckland Council and Foundation North, and the generous support of the Stout Trust, proudly managed by Perpetual Guardian, and Auckland Live.
Esther Stephens, producer of Kiri and Lou in Concert and Auckland Philharmonia’s Artistic Administrator, says, “It’s been so exciting to create a brand-new orchestral concert with these beloved characters and songs, and share this work with our partner orchestras so that tamariki across Aotearoa can enjoy the thrill of live orchestral performance with the magic of Kiri and Lou! This concert celebrates local artistic excellence in multiple creative industries, and we can’t wait for Auckland whānau to experience this wonderful homegrown production.”
