Experience the passion, tragedy, and heartbreak of La traviata this July

Get swept into the world of 18th century Paris as an unforgettable tale of true love unfurls at Auckland Philharmonia’s Pub Charity Opera in Concert production of Verdi’s La traviata. Right from its famous duet, the ‘Brindisi’, La traviata’s story of passion and loss is one of the most romantic and moving operas ever written. This sublime semi-staged production features a stellar cast of singers, who will perform alongside the powerful sound of Auckland’s full-strength professional orchestra on Saturday 5 July in the Auckland Town Hall.

Translated as ‘The fallen woman’, La traviata tells the tragic tale of one of the most compelling female characters in opera, Violetta Valéry. Verdi’s music is about raw dramatic power, thrilling voices and memorable melody, and La traviata is one of his most beloved operas.

Giordano Bellincampi steps up to the podium again for Auckland Philharmonia’s annual celebration of opera, alongside a cast that showcases the breadth of New Zealand opera talent. Oliver Sewell (tenor) makes a welcome return to Auckland as Violetta’s lover, Alfredo, following his second season as a member of the principal ensemble at Germany’s Theater Bremen. He will be joined by Phillip Rhodes (baritone) as Alfredo’s father Germont, who reprises this role following his debut with Opera Australia last year.

Also performing this heartbreaking score with the Auckland Philharmonia will be acclaimed rising Kiwi stars James Ioelu (bass-baritone) as Marquis D’Obigny, Felicity Tomkins (soprano), winner of the 2024 Herald Sun Aria Competition, as Annina, 2024 Lexus Song Quest winner Katie Trigg (mezzo-soprano) as Flora Bervoix and popular Samoan baritone Joel Amosa as Doctor Grenvil.

In the role of Violetta Valéry, Romanian soprano Luiza Fatyol will make her Australasian debut.  This follows her recent performance as Violetta with the prestigious Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, where she has been a member of the opera company’s ensemble since 2011. The cast will be complemented by The Freemasons Foundation NZ Opera Chorus.

Giordano Bellincampi, Auckland Philharmonia’s Music Director and conductor for this concert, says, “I am looking forward to presenting this beautiful score for our audiences with a cast of many New Zealand soloists and our wonderful Auckland Philharmonia. The opera describes the perpetual conflict between human love and society’s norms for acceptable social behaviour, with the story and the incredible music taking us all on an emotional journey and encouraging reflection on the choices we make in our own lives.”

The young nobleman Alfredo and the courtesan Violetta have fallen hopelessly in love. For Violetta, this is something new; it’s the first time her heart has ever truly been touched. But their blissful idyll is interrupted when Alfredo’s father asks her to make a terrible sacrifice…

Don’t miss seeing one of the world’s greatest tales of true love, passion and heartbreak, performed by a talented cast and the Auckland Philharmonia in the majestic setting of the Auckland Town Hall. Follow your heart and book now.
