Auckland Philharmonia 2026 Season — Now on Sale!

Auckland Phil bids adieu to concertmaster Andrew Beer

In June, violinist Andrew Beer will take his final bow as Auckland Philharmonia’s Concertmaster. After 12 years of service to the orchestra, Beer heads overseas to join Singapore Symphony Orchestra in its 2026/27 season as GK Goh Concertmaster.

“Congratulations to Andrew on this exciting new role that gives him the opportunity to take the next step in his career,” says Diana Weir, Auckland Philharmonia's Chief Executive.

“Since moving here from Canada in 2014 to join us as Concertmaster, Andrew has been a strong artistic leader, delivered memorable and high-standard soloist performances, supported New Zealand composers and soloists, and built warm relationships with our players, staff, audience and wider community. We wish him and his family all the best with his move to Singapore and look forward to celebrating him in the coming months.”

Andrew’s final performance with the Auckland Philharmonia will be at The New Zealand Herald Premier Series: Chopin & Tchaikovsky concert on Thursday 11 June, after which acclaimed violinist Max Tan will step in as the orchestra’s Interim Concertmaster. While under the capable interim leadership of Tan, the orchestra will embark on an extensive search to fill the Concertmaster role.

Weir continues, “While it’s sad to say farewell to Andrew from our shores, this is an exciting opportunity to welcome back violinist Max Tan, who will step into the Interim Concertmaster position. Dr Tan has performed on stages in North America, Europe, and Asia, holds the position of Concertmaster of Opera Philadelphia, and is an alumnus of Harvard and Juilliard. He will be a familiar face to many of our audience as he successfully led our orchestra as Guest Associate Concertmaster from June through to August 2025 and we look forward to his return to the Auckland stage in this interim capacity.”

Andrew Beer shared, "My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Auckland Philharmonia for 12 years of superb music making and great growth opportunities, it has been a privilege to work with such talented and passionate musicians and I have so many great memories of my time here. I also hope I have contributed to the orchestra’s legacy and spirit of artistic excellence. I am extremely excited and honoured to be joining the Singapore Symphony (SSO), a world-class orchestra in a deeply multicultural city, and look forward to helping with its outstanding path of growth and impact in Singapore and worldwide.”

Kenneth Kwok, CEO of the Singapore Symphony Group, commented, “Following an extensive global search, we are delighted to welcome Andrew to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. We look forward to the artistry he will bring to the SSO stage in our new season and beyond, working with incoming Music Director Hannu Lintu.”
