APO hits the right notes in 2018

APO Partnership Schools (APOPS) bring orchestral musicians into schools for mentoring sessions, as well as offering the opportunity for students to attend educational concerts and interactive performances by APO ensembles. Discovery concerts are educational and entertaining formats for secondary school students and Kiwi Kapers is an exciting romp through orchestral favourites for primary and intermediate schools.  Connecting with Music is a free concert for low-decile secondary schools, with renowned music educator Richard Gill delving under the hood of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

APO 4 Kids is an interactive event with music-themed activities and an hour-long concert aimed at under-sixes and their families. In 2018 APO presents a film screening of the beloved children’s books The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, with the lively musical score performed lived by the full orchestra. For older children and their families, The Composer is Dead is an entertaining symphonic murder mystery designed to teach children about the instruments in the orchestra.

Community Classics are our free hour-long concerts in venues in Central, South and West Auckland, celebrating music as a universal language in diverse communities. In Your Neighbourhood features small ensemble performances set within the intimate environment of community churches. Unwrap the Music presents the inner-workings of some of the most beloved symphonic works in a part-concert, part-interactive talk format.

For students moving onto the next level of music education, APO’s partnership with the University of Auckland School of Music offers aspiring musicians access to orchestral fellowships and internships, unique residency opportunities with our Young Soloist of the Year and Rising Star Composer-in-Residence, and masterclasses with some of the APO’s visiting international artists.
