A backstage pass: Go behind the scenes of Auckland Phil's 2025 Season

Auckland Philharmonia’s 2025 Season has a stellar lineup of over 40 electrifying concerts. We spoke to the mastermind behind the season, our Director of Artistic Planning Gale Mahood, who shares her thoughts and some special insights into the programme in store for next year.

What an incredible 2025 Season lies ahead, featuring performances by some of the world’s best artists.  What factors do you consider when building a full year of performances?

On the artist side, the process of building a programme begins with confirming dates that we can use venues. The next step is gathering guest conductor and soloist availabilities – this is a collaborative process involving many of the region's other orchestras and presenters as we often invite international artists for multi-week tours of Australia and New Zealand.

As high-profile performers are in demand and have less availability, we tend to place them in the early phase of planning. We also look for opportunities to feature local artists (including our own musicians) as soloists.

Ultimately, I look for musicians who have that magical combination of technical mastery and interpretative skills. The best artists tell a story with their playing and are also generous collaborators.

Who will be making debut performances next year?

We have some wonderful debuts next year. Korean guitarist JIJI will be making an Australasian debut in Rodrigo's famous Concierto de Aranjuez. She's been making a name for herself in the States and is quite the rising star over there, so it's an honour to be one of the first orchestras outside that market to share her talent.

Another important Australasian debut will be with Pierre Bleuse, one of the most exciting new conducting personalities in France. He has recently taken on the Music Directorship of Paris' Ensemble Intercontemporain and is a true institution in the world of contemporary music.

It's fantastic to see many artists returning to perform with us again next year, what do you think makes Auckland Phil a drawcard for international soloists?

Some wonderful friends of the orchestra are returning next year, including regular Auckland Phil collaborators James Ehnes, Spanish pianist Javier Perianes, and German Violinist Arabella Steinbacher.

We hear all the time from visiting artists about what a lovely group of musicians we have here at the Auckland Phil. They create such a welcoming and professional atmosphere, and are incredibly dedicated, motivated, phenomenal musicians in their own right. We are so fortunate to have this consummate group of dedicated professionals making their careers here in Auckland.

We also have such a warm and devoted audience who really show their appreciation. The guest conductors and soloists feel this love and that's something that they remember when they are considering re-invitations. It is a great testament to our city that so many high-profile performers come back to Auckland again and again.

What are some of your personal favourites in the 2025 programme?

I'm super excited to present the New Zealand premiere of James MacMillan's Concerto for Orchestra ‘Ghosts’ in March. He's one of the most important living composers of our time and we have commissioned this work together with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras. A concerto for orchestra features the members of the orchestra as soloists, so this piece will showcase our wonderful musicians. I am so proud of our players, and it will be a real privilege to feature their artistry centre stage.

We also have a wonderful programme for October themed around Halloween, featuring Berlioz's creepy Symphonie fantastique, which is an orchestral tour de force. It'll be a spine-chilling evening!

Can you speak to the rarely performed gems in store next year, and what surprising delights will they offer?

We're celebrating Ravel's 150th anniversary in 2025 with a performance of the score for the complete Daphnis et Chloe, which will be an unforgettable experience. We have one of the most respected interpreters of the French repertoire as our guide on this programme, Jun Märkl, who was just adored by the orchestra (and vice versa!) when he conducted La Mer with us last year. After that concert, I was surrounded by musicians asking, "Can Jun do Daphnis and Chloe next time?" So, that work is a special request from the players – they know the good stuff better than anyone, so this is not to be missed!

With over 40 concerts on offer in our 2025 Season, it can be tricky to select which to choose! In your view, what's the best way to select concerts?

Being a full series subscriber is a great option, as it allows you to experience the musical journey that I have programmed for each series across the season. Or if you prefer to pick your favourite mainstage concerts, new for the 2025 Season are two main series packages that provide flexibility to select concerts across the NZ Herald Premier and Classic Series, and reward you with more savings, the more concerts you buy.

It’s worthwhile booking a subscriber package to enjoy benefits, including best seats, savings on individual ticket prices and no booking fees.

If you’re unsure which subscription package is best for you, have a chat to our ticketing team. They are hugely knowledgeable and always happy to help.
