Composer Workshops

This collaboration between the Auckland Philharmonia and the University of Auckland School of Music provides aspiring composers at tertiary level with the opportunity to workshop, perform and record their original works with Auckland Philharmonia musicians.

These include three workshop opportunities and participants are selected from the University of Auckland School of Music. Each workshop focuses on a different ensemble or instrument, aiming to provide student composers with a diverse range of skills.

As well as being valuable experiences for participating composers to hear their pieces performed live by professional musicians, members of the public may also be able to attend. Please contact us for more information on how to secure your spot at

Composer Workshop - Orchestra

8-12 aspiring composers workshop a piece each with the full orchestra. The orchestra reads and plays through the new pieces, offering feedback and advice. Each session is professional recorded.

1.30pm, Monday 23 September

Composer Workshop - Solo

This installment of the series focuses on one orchestral instrument that changes each year. The instruments involved are chosen thoughtfully, selected based on what students don't have easy access to and therefore don't get to hear often.

Composer Workshop - Small Ensemble

The small ensemble workshop focuses on a different chamber group each year. Selected pieces written for the instrumentation of the ensemble are brought to life by the players and students receive feedback in return.
